Engine / Transmission / Drive
The Cannon is powered by GWM’s 2.4-litre single turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, delivering 135kW of power at 3,600rpm and 480Nm of torque between 1,500-2,500rpm. Mirroring its larger sibling, this engine ensures a smoother driving experience and enhanced power delivery across the rev range. It features an advanced Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT), which optimises the aspect ratio at both low and high RPM, reducing turbo lag while maintaining efficiency at higher speeds.
Paired with GWM’s in-house 9-speed conventional torque converter automatic transmission, this compact unit — no larger than a standard 6-speed — handles up to 750Nm of output. This proven powertrain delivers impressive responsiveness and pulling power while also enhancing fuel efficiency.

Equipped with a new generation of selectable intelligent all-terrain drive modes, the system enhances driving confidence by adapting vehicle dynamics to various conditions. Depending on the grade, up to seven modes are available, including Normal, Eco, Sport, Snow, Mud, and Sand. Easily engaged via a centrally located dial, the BorgWarner transfer case optimises traction, stability, and performance. Additionally, the Cannon features an electronically activated rear differential (standard on 4×4 models) and a front differential (XSR only), delivering enhanced off-road capability and the confidence to tackle any challenge.
Design and Styling
The GWM Cannon boasts a bold, muscular and modern exterior design, reflecting its capability and versatility. Blending rugged utility with contemporary sophistication, it appeals equally to urban drivers and off-road adventurers. Muscular wheel arches, sculpted bonnet lines, and a wide stance create a commanding yet aerodynamic profile, while the front is dominated by a distinctive grille with a horizontal bar and prominent Cannon badging. The rear tailgate now features embossed “GWM” branding, making a strong statement on the road, whilst practical design elements such as integrated side steps, roof rails, and a durable sports bar enhance both functionality and style.
Interior / Technology
The sumptuous feel of the Cannon’s interior is immediately apparent upon entry. Striking a perfect balance between rugged durability and modern sophistication, the interior features an elegant blend of premium materials, including soft-touch surfaces on the dashboard and door panels, elevating the ute segment with its refined aesthetic.
The redesigned centre console offers a clean and modern layout, reducing the number of buttons and dials for easier access. At its core, a large, high-definition 12.3-inch touchscreen display enables seamless wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. The dark interior is complemented by subtle chrome accents, adding a refined touch, while the newly designed steering wheel proudly encompasses the Cannon logo.
Functional and practical elements are thoughtfully integrated, including the aviation-inspired gear shifter — a signature of many GWM models — and a conveniently placed smartphone charging pad with USB-A and USB- C ports for versatile charging options. Drive modes and other essential controls are easily accessible via quick buttons surrounding the console.
The 7” free-standing digital driver instrument cluster features bright, clear, and streamlined graphics, offering enhanced information that can be easily customised using the steering wheel controls to further enhance the driver experience.
Safety
The GWM Cannon is equipped with seven airbags and features a suite of advanced active and passive safety technologies. Tested in 2021 under ANCAP’s most rigorous protocols, the Cannon earned a five-star safety rating (excluding the XSR, which remains untested). This five-star rating remains valid and will carry over to the 2025 Cannon.
