Australian specifications of the Next-Gen Ford Ranger have been confirmed, with the highlights being the new-to-Ranger optional 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel engine with 184 kW of power at 3,250 rpm and 600 Nm of torque, full-time 4WD32, up to six selectable drive modes28, 31 and 3,500kg towing20.
- Australians will be able to order the Next-Gen Ford Ranger from their local Ford dealership next month
- Ranger answers the call from customers for more technology, more torque and more capability, reflecting the broad use of pick-ups from work duties, to family and play
- The Australian designed and engineered Next-Gen Ranger will feature an optional 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel with 184kW of power and 600Nm of torque
Designed and developed in Australia, the Next-Gen Ranger has taken the immense success of Ranger and improved it with customer-led design and an impressive suite of technology, safety, comfort and drivetrain features.
Power and torque for work and play
Whether a customer’s priority is fuel economy, refinement, towing or hauling the powertrains chosen for Next-Gen Ranger will provide customers with compelling performance and capability, according to Pritika Maharaj, Ranger and Everest program manager.
The highlight is the addition of Ford’s proven 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel, which is being offered on both Ranger and the Everest SUV. “We’re offering this engine specifically because some customers told us they wanted more power and torque for towing and extreme off-roading,” said Maharaj.
Ford engineers treated the 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel like a brand-new engine, resulting in 184 kW of power at 3,250 rpm and 600Nm of torque from 1,750-2,250 rpm in both Ranger and Everest. “We did a lot of application calibration and validation work in both the US and Australia to make sure it would meet the needs of Ranger and Everest customers,” said Maharaj.
“The 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel delivers,” added Maharaj. “When you drive a Ranger with the V6 turbo-diesel, it feels like a much bigger truck. And it feels strong in the sense that it’s got plenty of power and torque, which is exactly what our customers told us they wanted.”
In addition to the 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine, the Next-Gen Ranger will offer the choice of the proven Single-Turbo 2.0-litre and the Bi-Turbo 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder diesels.
Ford’s 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo makes 154 kW at 3,750 rpm and 500 Nm from 1,750-2,000 rpm and will also continue to be available in Everest. This engine boasts a clever bypass system that determines the optimum operating mode, meaning the turbochargers can operate in series (at lower engine speeds for enhanced torque and responsiveness) or the smaller turbo can be bypassed allowing the larger turbocharger to deliver high power.
The Single-Turbo diesel will offer 125 kW at 3,500 rpm and 405 Nm from 1,750-2,500 rpm.
Transmission choices include a 10-speed auto that also sees service in the Ford F-150 and F-150 Raptor and has notched up more than six million kilometres of testing, including more than 3,900 km of sanctioned off-road racing, including at the Baja 1000. This transmission will be available on the 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel and 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo engines, across Ranger and Everest. The current six-speed automatic transmission available on Ranger will continue with the 2.0L Single-Turbo.

Ready for the Road Less Travelled
“Our customers told us that one of the reasons they love Ranger is because it’s one of the best vehicles on the road for ride comfort and car-like performance. So, retaining that and balancing it with off-road performance has been key throughout the development of Next-Generation Ranger,” said Rob Hugo, dynamic experiences supervisor, Ranger.
A 50mm track and wheelbase increase for Next-Gen Ranger has improved vehicle stability on- and off-road, said Hugo. It has also improved the unladen front approach angle and unladen rear departure angle.33
Further to the track increase which helped the team increase the width of Next-Gen Ranger’s tray for a more versatile load space – which now fits a Euro pallet1 – the rear dampers were moved outboard of the springs which makes for a more controlled ride whether the vehicle is laden or not. The load space is made even more versatile with the addition of a 1-metre ruler7 and cupholders6 built into the tailgate work surface.
“The outboard dampers have allowed us to tune a more controlled ride whether the vehicle is carrying a heavy load or not and solve a common complaint of pickups with inboard mounted dampers that they can bounce or skip when unladen,” Hugo said.
There’s now more storage space on the inside of Next-Gen Ranger too, from under-seat storage on Super and Double Cab models to retractable cup holders on Wildtrak and Raptor models and a raft of cubby holes stashed around the cabin. There’s room under the bonnet for an optional second battery11, and the Wildtrak variant can be fitted with an optional auxiliary switch bank (standard on Raptor) making it easier to install accessories like driving lights, a winch and more12. Moulded slots in the bedliner19 allow you to fit dividers to customise the tray, allowing you to store gear and stop it from sliding around.
Whether you’re a traditionalist or someone looking for additional peace of mind on the road, Ford is offering two four-wheel drive systems for Next-Gen Ranger. The base four-wheel drive is a ‘part-time’ system with a two-speed electronic shift-on-the-fly transfer case offering 2H, 4H and 4L as modes of operation. Next-Gen Ranger is also available with an on-demand four-wheel drive system (2H, 4A, 4H, and 4L) which allows Ranger to be driven in four-wheel drive on high-traction surfaces via its 4A (automatic) mode. When selected, the system continuously distributes power between the front and rear axles for optimum performance in all on-road conditions.
“This means a Ranger driver can just leave the truck in four-wheel drive (4A) and head off down the highway, down a country road, over a snowy mountain or across a sand dune without having to do anything else,” Hugo said.
Next-Gen Ranger continues to be offered with an electronic rear differential lock which can be activated via the SYNC® 4A13 screen. A differential lock allows both wheels on a specific axle to turn at the same speed providing additional traction when you’re off-roading.
Selectable Drive Modes28, 31 for Added Confidence on the Go
It used to be that only Ranger Raptor offered selectable drive modes28, 31, but now Next-Gen Ranger will offer up to six, depending on the variant. The modes28, 31 are: Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul (auto only), Slippery for on-road, and Mud/Ruts and Sand for use off-road. These modes adjust everything from the gearshift to throttle response, traction and stability controls, ABS and more.
“These selectable drive modes28, 31 are a very simple way of getting advanced traction to the wheels the way it needs to be delivered without having to be an expert,” said Hugo.
Tow/Haul mode is a brand-new drive mode28, 31 and is designed for those towing or carrying a heavy load in their Ranger. Selecting Tow/Haul mode optimises the gear shift timing to maintain power when you’re climbing up a hill or deliver the right amount of engine braking when you’re travelling down a hill. Next-Gen Ranger continues with a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg20 with a 350 kg tow ball download limit.
Continuing the towing theme, Next-Gen Ranger – depending on the model – now features an integrated trailer brake controller21, trailer connection checklist and trailer light check22 to simplify the process of hooking up your trailer. For added peace of mind, Ranger’s BLIS 2, 28 driver assistance technology will also allow for drivers to programme the size of their trailer for added coverage of their blind spots21.
In addition to the selectable drive modes28, 31, Next-Gen Ranger boasts a dedicated off-road screen10 on the SYNC 4A13 infotainment system. At the press of a button, owners can access the off-road screen10, which shows driveline and diff lock settings, steering angle, vehicle pitch and roll angles.

Towing to the Max
Ranger’s 3,500kg braked towing capability20 (2,500kg20 for Ranger Raptor) is maintained and suspension upgrades on Next-Gen Ranger deliver even better ride control and comfort whilst towing or hauling heavy loads. On XLT models and above, Ranger also now features rear disc brakes as standard for even better towing performance.
To make towing heavy loads easier and safer, Ford’s factory fit tow pack now includes an integrated trailer brake controller21. The integrated trailer brake controller ensures smooth and effective trailer braking by powering the trailer’s electric brakes with a proportional output based on the towing vehicle’s brake pressure.
The controller adapts its output based on the status of the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS). When the ABS module senses the towing vehicle’s brakes are approaching lockup, the controller’s braking strategy changes to compensate for traction conditions, reducing the risk of trailer brake lockup. The system also provides instant visual/audible warning in case of accidental trailer disconnect.
BLIS2, 28 with Cross-Traffic Alert and Trailer Coverage21 is a first for Ranger and offers Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) coverage for pick-up models2 and the trailer it’s towing. Using sensors built into the tail lamps, BLIS2, 28 can alert the driver when a vehicle in an adjacent lane is detected in the blind spot, which helps avoid collisions when switching lanes. In vehicles fitted with Ford’s factory Tow Pack20, the Trailer Coverage system21 can be set to the length of the trailer, supporting trailers up to 2.4 metres wide and 10 metres long. The system also allows you to store your trailer’s dimensions for quick setup. Once set, the system re-adjusts to account for the trailer, picking up vehicles in the customer’s blind spot sooner.
Integrated SYNC 4A13 features such as trailer connection checklist and Trailer Light Check22 simplifies the task of connecting your trailer by no longer having to rely on another person to act as a spotter, or for the driver to have to get out of the vehicle.
Ranger XLS models and above (excluding Raptor) feature the Tow/Haul drive mode which optimises gear shift timing to maintain best power delivery and engine braking and reduce shift ‘busyness’ when towing.
Next-Gen Technology and Connectivity – Segment-defining Smarts
Next-Gen Ford Ranger integrates Ford’s latest connectivity and driving technologies for a seamless connected experience whether customers are using the vehicle for work, family or play.
An 8-inch colour, configurable, digital instrument cluster3 (Raptor comes standard with a 12.4-inch cluster) allows more information to be presented to the driver than an analog system. Additionally, the large-format, 10.1 or 12-inch infotainment screens4, featuring Ford’s cutting-edge SYNC 4A13 communication and entertainment system, have helped declutter the dashboard.
Ranger’s all-new e-Shifter15 and electronic parking brake16 bring a high-tech feel to the interior and allow greater accessibility and space for drivers.
The Next-Gen Ranger takes lighting to the next level with LED headlamps5 and tail lamps24 as well as Matrix LED headlights25 standard on Raptor (optional on Wildtrak).
The FordPass™ App14 enables owners to use their smartphone to utilise features including Vehicle Locator, Vehicle Health Alerts, Remote Lock and Unlock, and Remote Start which activates the heating or cooling to the previously set temperature.
“We’ve not only made the Next-Gen Ranger smarter, but we’ve enhanced the user experience. Whether it’s being able to control certain vehicle features from your smartphone via the FordPass app, or the inclusion of new-generation infotainment, we’ve improved the interface between driver and vehicle,” said Chris Clarke, connectivity applications supervisor.
Key Ranger Technology Features
Digital Display
Next-Gen Ranger introduces an 8-inch fully digital instrument cluster that can be customised. The dash displays boast unique animations and includes a digital speedometer and tachometer. The animations also feature realistic body-style graphics. Raptor comes standard with a 12.4-inch fully digital instrument cluster.
Depending on the variant, owners can toggle between layouts showing information including driver-assist technologies, tachometer on or off, and extra gauges. There’s also a ‘calm view’, which simplifies information on demand from the display.
Because Next-Gen Ranger features on and off-road driving modes, the instrument cluster displays a different theme for each selected drive mode28, 31, with animated changes when the driver scrolls from one mode to another.
Smarter, Intuitive Connectivity with SYNC 4A13
At the heart of Next-Gen Ranger’s technology story is the SYNC 4A13 communications and entertainment system. This system offers wireless Apple CarPlay™26 and Android Auto™26 smartphone connectivity, and displays the latest features used to make the SYNC 4A13 system easier to navigate. Connected Built-In Navigation27 supplies real-time information like fuel pricing, traffic alerts and more.
Big Screen
Whether equipped with a 10.1- or a 12-inch infotainment screen4, Next-Gen Ranger features a customisable split-screen setup with an information-on-demand panel always available at the bottom of the screen. This displays key information, like connected navigation27, the user’s connected smartphone and more.
A large-format tablet screen was selected as it allows for a good depiction of navigation while still leaving space at the bottom of the screen for climate and entertainment controls.
Fewer Buttons, More Capability
Some of the traditional driving mode controls have been moved from the dash and centre console to their own dedicated display on the SYNC screen.
For example, with the touch of a button, drivers can access Ranger’s dedicated off-road screen10 where they can monitor the driveline, diff-lock indicators, steering angle, vehicle roll and pitch angles. Ranger models fitted with a 360-degree camera17 can also get a front camera view of the terrain ahead, with predictive overlay guidelines designed to help the driver negotiate obstacles.
Climate and entertainment can be controlled via the SYNC screen or with additional physical controls mounted just below the screen that allow for quick and easy adjustments.
Look All Around
The SYNC screen is linked to a 360-degree camera17 making parking easier in tight urban spaces or when negotiating tricky terrain. The system provides front, rear and birds-eye views, including blind spots, for added confidence.
Change Gear
Selected variants of Next-Gen Ranger are fitted with a short throw e-Shifter15 and electronic parking brake16 for a more high-tech feel. This change enables improved Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) 28, like Active Park Assist 2.023, 28 available only on Wildtrak and Raptor.
Keep It Charged
Next-Gen Ranger now allows customers to keep their compatible smartphone wirelessly charged and connected to SYNC 4A13 via a charging pad18 at the base of the centre console. Smartphones can also be charged via a cable to a USB port, or with the available 12V socket.
Power Up High
To cater for more drivers using dash cams, Next-Gen Ranger offers a high-mounted USB outlet alongside the rearview mirror.
Let There Be Light
Next-Gen Ranger’s Matrix LED headlights25, standard on Raptor and optional on Wildtrak, boast a raft of clever features, including auto dynamic levelling and speed dependent lighting that can adjust the intensity of the beam in front of the vehicle depending on the speed at which you’re travelling. The headlights also offer both static and dynamic bending capability as well as glare-free high-beams that help block light that could otherwise temporarily blind other drivers and cyclists.
Next-Gen Ranger’s new exterior zone lighting system9, can be controlled via the SYNC 4A13 screen or the FordPass™ App14 on compatible smartphones. This zone lighting consists of headlights, puddle lamps, numberplate lights and cargo box lights. These lights can be controlled as a ‘zone’ or altogether, which means owners don’t have to work, camp or do anything in the dark.
In the Palm of Your Hand
The FordPass™ App14 helps connect Next-Gen Ranger owners with their new truck more than ever. It allows them to remotely check the fuel level, odometer, vehicle location and more. It can also be used to activate the zone lighting9, remotely lock or unlock the vehicle, and even remote start14 to pre-condition the vehicle’s cabin to previously set temperatures. For peace of mind, during a remote start14, the Ranger remains locked and cannot be driven away without a valid key being detected.
Premium Sound
A B&O®29 sound system25, standard on Next-Gen Ranger Raptor and optional on Wildtrak, went through rigorous static and dynamic acoustic testing with the size and placement of the 10-speakers powered by a 660-watt amplifier fill the cabin with rich, emotional audio and maintain both power and clarity. The speaker grilles boast the iconic B&O design blending beautifully with the rest of the Ranger’s interior.
Keep Your Cool
Next-Gen Ranger also features a new climate control system with a compressor featuring variable-stroke technology. Reduced compressor cycling has improved refinement and fuel efficiency via lower engine load. Owners will be able to access the climate controls via SYNC 4A13 or physical buttons at the base of the screen. A new sensor measures cabin temperature and humidity to quickly adjust modes and fan speed to maintain a comfortable cabin in all weather conditions.
